Much has been written concerning the future of gaming with people throwing their support behind one of the Big 3: Microsoft, Sony, and Nintendo. With many more cheering for the PC. I gotts say I'm behind the Wii and PC 100%. The Wii is by far the most innovative counsel of this generation. The controller will make for a new and dynamic gaming experience, and players can also opt for a more traditional feel. Some people have said the Wii's controller will replace the traditional controller, but I disagree. The Wii controller will be different, and for many, more fun. Traditional controllers meet the need of traditional gamers.

My very last post was on Tuesday, November 01, 2005. Such a long time ago, but I have been busy doing important stuff. Stuff like working (14 hours a day, 6 days a week), doesn't leave a whole lot of time in the day. But work hours have been reduced and I am a happy man right now.

It was 222 years ago in Philadelphia that the ideal of government as the servant of the people rather than the powerful was born. Unrelated as it may seem, the SEPTA strike demonstrates how far we have drifted from the ideal

One of the principal issues in the strike is "management rights" --- the right to organize working arrangements to obtain the greatest amount of service in exchange for the fares and subsidies paid by the people. This is not a dispute between labor and management, rather the opposing parties are labor and the public. Indeed, "management rights" is a misnomer. They are public rights --- the riders and taxpayers have a right to services and fares that correspond to the level of funding, and they are not receiving it. When SEPTA workers are paid more than the going rate, SEPTA is less productive and the people are denied their rights to a full return. Within the bounds of the labor laws that protect all workers from overly burdensome or unsafe working practices, SEPTA's responsibility is to minimize costs and fares and maximize service for the riders.

Make no mistake about it --- up to this point SEPTA has served its powerful unions before the public. Employee compensation has risen to double the rates at comparable union jobs in the private sector. And the gap between average SEPTA pay and that of the average rider is just as large. SEPTA's excessively high labor costs mean that less transit service is provided at fares that are higher than necessary. In response, fewer people use SEPTA services. And the periodic strikes don't help. All of this combines with other factors to encourage Philadelphians to abandon the city. The SEPTA story is not unique; indeed the story is the same in other large US cities.

Philadelphia and other America cities need transit systems that carry more people, not less. This requires that they be servants of the people, not the powerful. The same is true of other public services in which unions extract more than their fair share at the expense of the people. It is time for a new American revolution in public services, one that affirms the ideal of government as the servant of the people. What better place for it to start than Philadelphia.

The people most affected by this ridiculous strike just happens to be poor people and those who live in the city of Philadelphia. The suburban people still get the Regional Rail. Strikes such as this is one of the reasons people are beginning to have a negative impression of Unions and wish for their destruction. Unions have a firm grip on the labor market that it is almost impossible to get employment if one does not join. Employers should not deal with Unions. What a wonderful day that would be.

Harriet Miers Withdraws Supreme Court Nomination

Today Supreme Court Nominee Harriet Miers has officially stepped down as a candidate to fill vacant seat left by the Honorable Sandra Day O'Connor. The nomination of Miers has alienated many conservatives and the president has gotten a lot of heat for his choice. Chances are the president will elect a more conservative judge making his supporters very happy.

Over at The News Blog there is an incredibly racist and disgusting post. Maryland Lt. Gov. Michael S. Steele has official entered the race for a senate seat. I wish Steele the best of luck and hope he does well, however the writers at the news blog are democrats/liberals and think that if a black person disagrees with them, that person is a Sambo. In his post the writer fails to mention what policies they disagree with or exactly why Mr.Steele would make a bad a senator. Mentioned only is that Lt. Governor Steele is black and a Republican. Why not blog about his credentials, his views on taxes, what role does the federal government has in the lives of the American citizen? It is clear that the bloggers at The News Blog are nothing more than bigoted group think assholes.

Breaking News in Philadelphia! Train Station Evacuated

Today around Market East Station was evacuated because a suspicious package was found. I was told Regional Rail service between Suburban Station and Fern Rock is suspended until further notice. Also, 11th Street and 12th Street of Filbert Street are block off. The bomb squad was called in and the Police has detained a man.
I just got back home to report this and I'm going back out with my camera.

The General Manager released a statement today outlining what had happened.
A train conducter noticed a man acting erractic and suspicious. The man was questioned and the conducter called SEPTA Police to meet the train at the next station. A Transit Police K9 dog was brought to the scene it made a “positive hit” on the suspect. The bomb squad was Philadelphia Police Department bomb squad was then called in. After tests were done, it was determined that the K-9 "hit on a nozzle of a propane tank.

Britain has accused Iran of responsibility for explosions which have caused the deaths of all eight UK soldiers killed in Iraq this year. A senior British official, briefing correspondents in London, blamed Iranian Revolutionary Guards.
He said they provided the technology to a Shia group in southern Iraq. The Iranians had denied this, he added.
The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the technology had come from Hezbollah in Lebanon via Iran and produced an "explosively shaped projectile".
He said that dissidents from the Mehdi army, a militia controlled by the radical Shia cleric Moqtada Sadr, were suspected of carrying out the attacks.
One of their leaders, Ahmed al-Fartusi, was arrested by British forces. It was that arrest which sparked off an anti-British protest in Basra recently.

Palestinian arrested for trying to stab Israeli soldier

A Palestinian teenager was arrested by Israeli troops for attempting to stab a woman army officer at a checkpoint in the northern West Bank. "The soldier escaped the knife blow and the commander of the checkpoint opened fire towards the assailant," said an army spokeswoman
Although the knife-carrier was not hit, another Palestinian was wounded and evacuated by a Palestinian paramedics, the spokeswoman said Wednesday.

Palestinian security sources and witnesses named the suspected assailant as 16-year-old Uday Mleitat.

Witnesses said Mleitat was beaten by the soldiers who arrested him.

New Orleans laying off about half of work force

Mayor Ray Nagin said today the city is laying off as many as 3,000 employees — or about half its work force — because of the financial damage inflicted on New Orleans by Hurricane Katrina.

Nagin announced with "great sadness" that he had been unable to find the money to keep the workers on the payroll.

He said only non-essential workers will be laid off and that no firefighters or police will be among those let go.

"I wish I didn't have to do this. I wish we had the money, the resources to keep these people," Nagin said. "The problem we have is we have no revenue streams."

Nagin described the layoffs as "pretty permanent" and said that the city will work with the Federal Emergency Management Agency to notify municipal employees who fled the city in the aftermath of Katrina, which struck about a month ago.

The mayor said the move will save about $5 million to $8 million of the city's monthly payroll of $20 million. The layoffs will take place over the next two weeks.

"We talked to local banks and other financial institutions and we are just not able to put together the financing necessary to continue to maintain City Hall's staffing at its current levels," the mayor said.

Meanwhile, former President Clinton met with dozens of New Orleans-area evacuees staying at a shelter in Baton Rouge's convention center.

What about all the donations the American people have given?
Shouldn't that money be used to help people get jobs and rebuild the city?
If rebuilding is what is we are trying to do, firing people from their jobs is not the way to do it. The hundreds of millions that poured into New Orleans and organizations designed to help the victims need to be investigated and held accountable.

It's good to see slick Willy out and about. I wonder how his bid to the first African American sectary general of the UN is going.

Officials ended their door-to-door sweep for corpses finding far fewer bodies than once feared and school children returned to classes as New Orleans revved up efforts to recover from Hurricane Katrina.

The search for Katrina victims ended in Louisiana with a death toll at 964, substantially less than the 10,000 victims some officials feared. A private company hired by the state to remove bodies was on call if any others were found.

Mayor Ray Nagin said soon after Katrina struck that New Orleans alone could have 10,000 dead.
"There might still be bodies found, for instance, if a house was locked and nobody able to go into it," said Bob Johannessen, a spokesman with the state Department of Health and Hospitals. Mississippi's death toll remained at 221.

EU bans arms sales to Uzbekistan

The EU has approved an arms embargo on Uzbekistan after the violent suppression of anti-government protests in the city of Andijan in May.

EU ministers meeting in Luxembourg said the sanctions were a consequence of Tashkent's refusal to allow an independent inquiry into the events.
The Uzbek government says fewer than 200 people died in what it describes as an Islamic uprising.

On Monday two Uzbek soldiers gave testimony, saying they had orders only to shoot armed people but had difficulties because of the darkness...
The New York-based group Human Rights Watch has been calling for an arms embargo and other sanctions since it began.

The EU's decision to impose sanctions was taken in response to what the ministers described as the "excessive, disproportionate and indiscriminate use of force" in Andijan.

Halo Movie

Plans to get Master Chief on the big screen are well underway, it appears.

Bungie Studios, developer of the video game hits Halo and Halo 2, says Microsoft has struck a partnership with Universal and 20th Century Fox to make a Halo movie slated for release in 2007.

The initial script is done, written by Alex Garland, whose writing credits include the movie 28 Days Later and the book The Beach (made into a movie with Leonardo DiCaprio).

Variety.com says Garland was paid $1-million (U.S.) by Microsoft for his work on Halo.
In a posting on Bungie.net, Bungie writer and director of cinematics Joseph Staten says he was blown away by Garland's initial draft.

“How did that draft turn out? Let me put it this way: I wrote the script for both Halo games, but as Alex's interpretation rumbled from one climax to the next I found myself wondering (sometimes aloud): ‘Damn! How's the Chief gonna fight his way outta this?' Only to follow up a few pages later with: ‘Oh man, I can't wait to see that on screen!' Good stuff.

“And it kept getting better with each successive draft.”

Bungie and Microsoft have assembled “an exhaustive companion” on the Halo universe to accompany the script during the film's production, Staten said.

“We built this universe bible/style-guide to inspire and inform the filmmakers as well as serve as a point-of-reference for all parties in the event of creative disagreements,” he said.

The film will be produced by Peter Schlessel, with the director to be chosen soon.

“I recently saw a list of ‘available and interested' candidates, and trust me: it's an embarrassment of riches,” Staten writes.

Variety.com reports that the studios will pay Microsoft $5-million against 10 per cent of the movie gross.

Set in the future, Halo tells the story of one soldier — Master Chief — and his fight against an alien invasion.

Microsoft Readies Two Versions of the Xbox 360
Gaming console will be available in a $300 basic edition and a $400 premium edition.

Microsoft's Xbox 360 will be available in two versions costing $300 and $400 when it is launched later this year, the company says.
The announcement, which was made at the Games Convention event in Leipzig, Germany, fills in one of the last and most important pieces of information about the console.

Capable of high-definition video, the Xbox 360 is considerably more powerful than any gaming console available at present. At a recent event in Tokyo the company showed previews of several Xbox 360 games and all featured stunning graphics that bring a new level of realism to computer gaming.

At the heart of the console will be a three-core Power PC chip custom-produced for the console by IBM and a graphics chip from ATI Technologies. It also has a 12X dual-layer DVD-ROM drive and the more expensive version includes a 20GB hard drive, wireless controller, headset, ethernet cable, and wireless remote control.

All of the accessories included in the pricier package, dubbed the premium edition, will also be available as individual add-ons to the basic system.

Waiting for a Launch Date

With the major specifications and the price set, the only other big announcement awaited from Microsoft is the actual launch date. It's promised to put the Xbox 360 on sale in North America, Europe, and Japan before the end of this year. Japanese pricing details will be announced at the Tokyo Game Show next month.

That launch schedule should put the console in the shops several months before Sony Computer Entertainment launches its PlayStation 3 console. The PlayStation 3 has an equally impressive specification sheet that includes an eight-core processor that boasts a total performance of 218G FLOPS (floating point operations per second)--35 times the performance of the PlayStation 2.

Combined with an Nvidia graphics system, the Sony console should pack about double the power of the Xbox 360, although how much of that can be translated into a better gaming experience will depend on the game programmers.

Moving towards launch, Microsoft also announced it has lined up three companies to manufacture the console. They are Singapore's Flextronics International and Taiwan's Wistron, both of which produce the current-generation Xbox console, and Canada's Celestica. All three companies will produce the Xbox 360 at their respective factories in China, Microsoft says. Original PC World Story

The United Nations bankrolled the production of thousands of banners, bumper stickers, mugs, and T-shirts bearing the slogan "Today Gaza and Tomorrow the West Bank and Jerusalem," which have been widely distributed to Palestinian Arabs in the Gaza Strip, according to a U.N. official.

The U.N. support of the Palestinian Authority's propaganda operation in the midst of the Israeli evacuation of Jewish settlers from the Gaza Strip has provoked outrage from Israeli and Jewish leaders, who are blaming Turtle Bay for propagating an inflammatory message that they say encourages Palestinian Arab violence.

"The intifada worked. That's contextually what this message is saying," the director of U.N. affairs for the Washington-based Jewish organization B'nai Brith, Amy Goldstein, said.

The Arabic slogan, which refers to disputed territories of the West Bank and East Jerusalem, has become ubiquitous in Gaza, where Israeli soldiers this week are evacuating 21 settlements. It's served as the central message of a Palestinian Arab effort to spin the withdrawal as a victory.

A special representative of the United Nations Development Program in the Gaza Strip, Timothy Rothermel, told Fox News that his office provided financial support for the production of materials that make up the Palestinian Authority's propaganda campaign, timed to coincide with the Gaza pullout. The Palestinian Authority's withdrawal committee developed and produced the posters and other items using U.N. money, Mr. Rothermel said.

In addition to the slogan "Today Gaza and Tomorrow the West Bank and Jerusalem," many of the materials displayed the logo of the United Nations Development Program, which operates in 166 countries and spends about half a billion dollars a year. Complete article here.

"We will intensify the attacks even within the Green Line," Shalah told Al Manar Television last night. He said, however, that the attacks would resume only after Israel had completed destroying all the Jewish communities in Gaza and north Shomron.

Shalah said that terrorism is the only way to "liberate Palestinian land" from Israel.

Because of our force, Israel ran away from Lebanon, and because of our force, we are succeeding in getting rid of Israel from the Gaza Strip... There is no room here for the State of Israel. US signs off world's largest solar power plant

A deal has been signed to build the world's largest solar power plant in southern California.

The 4,500 acre site will generate 500 megawatts using 20,000 37-foot solar collectors. These focus the sun's power to drive Stirling engines, which use temperature differentials to drive pistons without the use of oil and with zero emissions.

"At a time of rising fossil-fuel costs and increased concern about greenhouse gas emissions, the Stirling project would provide enough clean power to serve 278,000 homes for an entire year," said John Bryson, chairman of Southern California Edison, who has signed a 20-year deal to buy power from the site.

The finished plant could also be extended to create 850 megawatts of power at a later date. A test system of six solar arrays has been operating for 26,000 hours at the Sandia National Laboratories in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

The use of Stirling engines doubles the efficiency of traditional solar power systems, such as photovoltaic cells or parabolic troughs, which generate steam for turbines.

Stirling engines were invented nearly 200 years ago by Scottish clergyman and part time engineer Robert Stirling. They generate small amounts of electricity very quietly and have been used for decades, notably in the Swedish Navy's submarine fleet. ---- End of Story.
